What is Transcription
Transcription is simply converting video or audio files into written text–see it is that simple. Many professionals use this service, such as Doctors, Lawyers, directors, producers–to name a few. You have three main types of transcription jobs, general, legal, and my personal favorite medical transcription.
There is a great training course that I took last year. This course will give you the tools you need to either work with a transcription company or as a freelance. I will discuss this further later on.
There are two ways to get the files to transcribe:
- working for a transcription company who gets the files from the client. The transcription company you are working with will send the files to you to convert to text.
- getting the audio directly from clients as a freelance transcriptionist
You can also take on audio files directly from various different clients (based on your relevant expertise and experience) to transcribe them and send back to the clients as a freelance transcriptionist. As a transcriptionist, you will listen to audio files and type up the spoken language into written format using transcription software.
What is Required For Work From Home Transcription Jobs
To be a transcriptionist you must have fast and accurate typing skills. Other skills include spelling and grammar skills. You will also need a quiet work area with a desk, a comfortably chair, headset and a foot pedal. I recommend Express Scribe Transcription Foot Pedal Bundle which works on both PC and MAC.
If you are interested in General Transcription, training is not necessary, but to get the tools you need to jump right in, you can obtain training at a reasonably rate. Why not start off on the right foot (pun intended), and get the training that you need to land that gig.
Transcribe Anywhere offers both the General Transcription and the Legal Transcription course at a reasonable rate, and the best part is you can take as long as you want to finish the course.
For Medical Transcription you can take the course on your own schedule at Career Step, where you can train at home to work at home.
How Much Can I Earn from Transcription Jobs?
If you are looking to supplement your income or just want a side hustle, you can do so working from home as a transcriptionist. You can make as anywhere from $15 to $25 per hour or more. This is dependent on the company you are transcribing for, or how fast a typist you are. You should note that transcription companies pay a rate per audio hour, which is not the same a regular hour. As an example, if you are getting paid $60 per an audio hour, it could take up to five hours to transcribe one hour of audio,
There are many transcription companies out there. However, please be aware of scams-any company asking for money to work is most definitely a scam. It would be in your best interest to do some research. Below is a list of legitimate work from home transcription companies:
